Why dividing by 100 is wrong

Minutes are based on 60, not 100.

For example, 30 minutes is half an hour: 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5

Writing 30 minutes as 0.30 hours would mean only 18 minutes, because 0.30 × 60 = 18

This mistake can materially change payroll or billing totals.

Converting decimal hours back to minutes

Reverse the operation by multiplying the decimal value by 60.

0.35 × 60 = 21 minutes

0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes

If the number includes whole hours, convert only its fractional portion. For 4.75 hours, keep the 4 hours and convert .75 × 60 = 45 minutes.

The decimal hours calculator handles both directions.

Rounding and payroll

Conversion and rounding are not the same thing. The exact conversion of 20 minutes is 20/60 = 0.333333…. Showing 0.33 is a display choice that loses some precision.

When values will be totaled or multiplied by a pay rate, preserve adequate precision internally and apply rounding only when the destination system or applicable rule requires it. Do not use a conversion chart as justification for changing original time punches.
